HISTORY OF NENA
1941 The First New England Numismatic Conference met in Boston, Mass, on May 23rd, 1941. Periodic gatherings of New England Numis- matists had long been advocated by the late Shepard Pond and this meeting was occasioned largely through his efforts and held under his chairmanship. The NENA is a direct offspring of this Conference.
19 4 6 After a lapse of five years, the Second New England Numismatic Conference was held in Boston under the Chairmanship of Henry Schuhmacher who felt that the Conference should be revived.
1947 The Third New England Numismatic Conference met in Providence with Horace Grant as Chairman. At this Conference, NENA was baptized and organized as an established Numismatic group embrac- ing the whole of New England, her purposes and ideals were deter- mined, and her first officers elected. Harold Whiteneck was installed as the first NENA President.
194 8 The Fourth Annual Convention was held in Worcester, with Arthur Moore as Chairman, NENA undertook to publish “NENA News” and Arthur Moore was elected our second president.
1949 The Fifth Annual Convention was held in Springfield, with Howard Macintosh as Chairman. At the business meeting he was elected our new president.
19 50 The Sixth Annual Convention was held in Hartford, with Theodore Robbins as Chairman. Max Kuhner was elected president and the office of Publicity Director was established.
1951 The Seventh Annual Convention was held in New Haven, wdth Walter Johnson as Chairman. For the first time the length of the Conven- tion was extended to include two full days of numismatic activity. At the business meeting a constitution was adopted and Maurice Gould was elected president.
1952 The Eighth Annual Convention was held in Boston under the Chair- manship of James F. Clapp, Jr. For this meeting a medal was struck in bronze, silver and gold to commemorate the 3 00th anniversary of the Pine Tree Shilling. Earl Tuttle was elected president for the coming year.
19 53 The Ninth Annual Convention was held in Worcester with Earl Beilis as Chairman. At the business meeting Theodore Robbins was elected president.
1954 The Tenth Annual Convention was held in Hartford, on Oct. 9th & 10th at the Hotel Bond. The Convention Chairman was Richard D. Moore. A special medal specifically designed for NENA and the 10th Annual Convention was struck. The largest Bourse ever held along with an excellent Auction made this one of the finest NENA Conven- tions held to date.
1 9 55 The Eleventh Annual Conference is to be held at the Sheraton- Biltmore Hotel in Providence, Rhode Island, on Oct. 8th & 9th. The Rhode Island Coin Club will be the host club.

A LITTLE ABOUT LITTLE RHODY . . .
Rhode Island may be the smallest State but here and in communities nearby began the history of the nation.
It was here that the bold Vikings first tasted the sweet juices of luscious fruits; it was here that the exiled Roger Williams found a true haven of friendship where men might live in peace and comfort apart from the vicious tongues of selfish and narrow-minded neighbors. From this land sailed daring adventurers who laid the foundations of commerce and international good-will. From these pleasant farms and peaceful hamlets have gone countless heroes of war and peace; art, science, industry and law have counted among their outstanding leaders, men and women who boasted of their Rhode Island origin.
At the time the Colonial greenbacks were to be issued it is to Rhode Island’s credit, and worthy of her tradition, that she protested against this lavish issuance of paper money.
The greatest amount of pressure in favor of a sea force, when none existed at the outbreak of the Revolution, came from the Colony of Rhode Island. Stephen Hopkins of Providence led the Navy Plan advocates in Continental Congress, and when that body finally voted to fit out a tiny fleet, Esek Hopkins, brother of Stephen, was appointed its first Commander-in- Chief.
Roger Williams organized and was the first pastor of the First Baptist Church. Much later when Brown University moved to the city of Providence, this school of learning meant much to the church and led to the building in May, 1775. This same meeting house still stands impressing all with its great dignity and stern beauty and is a fine example of excellent colonial architecture. Roger Williams established his civil state in this vicinity; he lived, was baptized, and buried close to the spot, since hallowed by the presence of this historic place of worship.
PresMent’s Pa^e
To members and guests of the New England Numismatic Association:
Welcome to Providence — The Jewelry Center of the World.
" Another year, with its busy round of pleasures and toil, has been added to the New England Numismatic Association.
As a matter of congratulation it can fairly be said that we stand on a firmer basis and with a stronger membership than here-to-fore.
Our Committees have made a special effort to try to make your stay in Providence a memorable one.
I therefore extend to you my heartiest greetings at this the nth Conference of the New England Numismatic Association.

1895 PROOF SILVER DOLLARS
Note; It is with great pleasure that we offer the following two lots of 1895 Proof Silver Dollars. The demand for coins of this date has been so great that it is good to know that more than one bidder will be able to be successful in obtaining an example for his col- lection. Recent article written by Mr. Stuart Mosher of the Smith- sonian Institution in Washington implies that this coin will become of greater value in years to come. He predicted the rise of this coin ten years ago from the $20.00 price it was selling at to the current rise exceeding $325, at recent auctions. There is no doubt in the cataloguers mind that his new predictions may again come true.
1895 Brilliant Proof. Free from any hairlines. Really a choice piece. The Dupont specimen realized $300.00 and this one is well worth a bid in excess of that price
1895 Gold and blue highlights in hair and on edge. Brilliant Proof. (Another is being offered as part of a small set of Proofs later on in this catalogue. It is also interesting to note that in the Luhnow consignment which is also in this catalogue another ex- ample appears. It is our belief that a new record has been estab- lished with having 4 examples in one auction sale. All will no doubt establish record prices)

THE RARE 1921 BRILLIANT PROOF
19 21 The last of the Morgan head dollars struck in Brilliant Proof. Some blue toning. Really a gem. (Also referred to in Mr. Stuart Mosher’s Article. He states that many are so called Proofs due to early striking. However some Proofs were struck and differ from the first strikes by having a high wire edge, and full brilliant surface; no example had been seen by him). This coin has all the characteristics as described and therefore a great rarity. No doubt will command a top price. This coin is said to have been the original Henry Chapman specimen
1921 An example of the early strikes of this date. Has 3 faint nicks on face. Uncirculated with full brilliancy of a Proof 1921 Bought as a Brilliant Proof. However only a first strike. Some rubbings in field. Uncirculated with Proof Surface
